Portraits are my favorite. Although sometimes difficult to paint the essence of the person, I strive to capture this part of them in my paintings.
At the moment I’ve detoured from portraits while I’m working on a painting for an expo in the Science Museum here in Ensenada. It’s called El Museo de Caracol. In my art class, we were asked to choose between marine flora and fauna. I chose the California Gray whale which is iconic to the waters of Baja.
Every year, my husband and I take at least three groups of 13 people down to the San Ignacio Lagoon, more or less in the middle of the Baja Peninsula, where the Gray whales breed and give birth to their young. Many people believe they live in the cold waters of Alaska but actually, that area is their feeding ground for 6 months out of the year.
Starting in late December, they begin their journey down the western U.S. coast all the way to Mexico and warm waters of Baja: their home. The whales are in Baja waters from early January to late May.
Since I feel the Gray Whale is such an important part of my life I decided to paint them for the Expo in June. After that, it’s back to portraits. My daughter is patiently waiting for hers!
